ACOUSTIC HERITAGE COLLECTIVE AND MATHIAS KLENNER presents:
Gothic Acoustics in Contemporary Art:
A Set of Audio Tools for La Capella.
La Capella is a Gothic chapel from the 15th century that currently serves as an art venue for emerging artists in the city of Barcelona.
While much research on archeo-acoustics of Gothic spaces has focused on the heritage and musical tradition of these spaces, this paper presents La Capella as a contemporary art production space.
It highlights the unique acoustics of the chapel, including its long reverberation, and proposes a set of audio tools specifically designed for sound artists working within this space.
The project aims to safeguard the acoustic heritage of La Capella de l'Antic Hospital in Barcelona by identifying its main acoustic characteristics through the following actions:
i) in-situ acoustic ambisonic measurements
ii) acoustic simulation of the original structure using software
iii) creation of an impulse response library
iv) design of a real-time auralization tool
This study not only provides valuable information on archeo-acoustics, but also enables artists and musicians to simulate their pieces in the space using a plugin.
The project was done as part of the “Angel peligrosamente Búho [Duelos, Espectros y Materialidad]” collective exhibition curated by Núria Gómez.
Specifically for the sound piece “El Tercer Tono” from the artist Violeta Mayoral, that uses the acoustic characteristics of the space.
